mission email oct 30

Dear Family;
How are you all doing?  It’s a normal October day here on Guam 85 degrees with sunshine and a chance of rain in fact it already has rained couple of times. Tomorrow it will be 85 degrees and partly cloudy with a chance of rain. It has not varied much since we got here just more rain on some days. It is interesting that the trees seem to know its fall and have been dropping their leaves but the weather is the same.  Thanksgiving and Christmas should be interesting with 85 degrees partly cloudy and a chance of rain.
We got to go on a hike with the Institute young single adults last Saturday to Terague Beach on Andersen Air Force base.  I took some nice pictures.  It is so beautiful here.  Just after we started Sister Norton had to use the bathroom so we hustled through the hike and she found a nice restroom at Bamboo Willies.  Elder and Sister Jex thought we were racing with them as we were done with the hike about a half hour ahead of them and the rest of the young adults.  I guess our morning walks are paying off as we can walk along pretty well now.
We have been busy working with the investigators, new members and less active.  Steve who was almost baptized a few weeks ago but had a problem the night before with a bunch of Chuukesee  (so called friends) who got him to drink and fight with some native Chamorro’s . This resulted in the whole family having to move out and we had to postpone his Baptism.  I guess there is allot of resentment for the Micronesian people coming here to Guam, the young people both male and female, find it easy to get caught up in gang wars of sorts.  But the Gospel changes hearts and our youth the white Navy kids, Micronesian kids, and native Chamorro look out for and seem to love each other unconditionally allot of missionary work, if not all, is done amongst the youth.  We Love our YM YW and young single adults.
There is always a blessing in disguise and Bishop Dana found Steve and his family temporary housing away from a cranky relative, now  they are together again including Steve.  Steve is just a great young man who needs the gospel to give him a purpose to life. We had a service project Monday morning and when Steve came over he saw the coconut trees palm fronds needed to be trimmed so he pulled off his shoes took his machete and off he went straight up the tree some about 35 to 40 feet, it was amazing to watch.  I believe Steve felt true remorse last Sunday he wants to accept God and follow Jesus example.  Acts 2 37-39
37.  Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and Brethren, what shall we do?
38. Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
39. For the promise is unto you, and your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
Steve has asked for forgiveness.  Our God is a forgiving and Loving God and Steve will be baptized this Saturday, Nov 3, along with Tony Kinianwe are excited for these Baptisms as we see so much potential in these two men.
When we first got here we taught a little girl named Meyline Kinian and then we helped teach her Brother Calvin, Tony is the Father and he has given up chewing Bettlenut finally. I think I told you about Bettlenut it is addictive chewed along with tobacco and therefore a word of wisdom issue to overcome for most all the Micronesians, he was chewing 30 times a day.  His wife Brenda is so happy that he is joining with her and the family.  They live very humbly but are very industrious, He weaves belts out of nylon strand, I have one of his belts (I am wearing it now).  He has come to church three weeks in a row and now the good news is we will have another family complete!
Bettlenut stains teeth badly and it is a tell tale sign of a bettlenut abuser, but Tony cleaned his teeth up nicely. Today we were at another investigators home and he too had cleaned his teeth.  They looked nice and we asked how do you do it?  We get one of those green pot scrubbers and just scrub our teeth clean. I did not ask if he used a little comet with it, it’s probably not the best idea but I guess it works for them!  FYI we also found out you can use coconut to make a toothbrush somehow.
I thought I would share with you a few notes from our zone conference a few weeks ago.  I Love these meetings as we are taught by the young Elders and our Mission President and his wife.  President and Sister Mecham are awesome and we Love them as well as our zone leaders.  My notes…..
“If you’re not progressing it’s like standing on an escalator going down”
“Your minutes are numbered!”   (Our awesome district  leader Elder Dalmer is going home next week we will surely miss him)
“Heavenly Father wants to bless those who consecrate their lives.”
“You don’t know what you can’t do!”
“Push yourself past your fear; people listen when you rely upon the Lord”
“The best missionary work begins where your comfort ends. Get uncomfortable!”
“When you have no were else to turn rely upon the Lord”
“Trust in God, not in the arm of flesh”
“Exercise faith to invite miracles in the lives of our investigators”
“When you have been called of the Lord and when you are moved upon by the Holy Ghost.  Then you will speak the Will of the Lord, the Mind of the Lord, and the Word of the Lord”.  D&C 68 3-6  Alma 29:4
“USE the Book of Mormon in every lesson, Study it every day!” (So you can recall it)
“ Preach my Gospel is scripture study it every day!”  (Ditto)
“Doubt not, Fear Not” D&C 6:36
“For Heaven’s Sake Be A Little Persistent. These are your Brothers and Sisters!”
“Think Big Expect Success!”
“Courage, for God has not given us the spirit of doubt!”
“By weak things of the earth shall great things happen.”    ( 18 and 19 year old missionaries coming? )
“Help people believe, believe, believe.  Bust the crust off their hearts!”
“Every day at 6:30 am we all need to unite in prayer that the Lord will pour down his spirit, that the people of this Island will recognize the message.  We must pray for and ask for the miracles we seek.”
We set a zone record for Guam in September (42 seven better than ever before)) let set another one in October.  Do not let the holidays stop you, set Thanksgiving Day and Christmas day as a day to baptize, why not?  Don’t let people tell you it’s a holiday come back another time, remember to be persistent, our message is the best gift they could ever receive.  Imagine a family all dressed in white standing near you and a baptismal font on Christmas day.

Does this get you excited to do Missionary work like it does for me?  We Love our Mission!

Love you
Elder Norton

mission email 10-24

A week has past so hi again!

Good news!  Ermina and her family including her son Steve are living now in a little house found for the them by our Bishop .Steve is back on track with lessons and has a  baptism date for November 3rd! We are so happy!

Institute this week: We showed the girls the new Johnny Lingo movie and I gave a lesson on self worth and being happy knowing they are daughters of a Heavenly father who loves them!

As daughters of God when we do not love ourselves, we are not respecting the things God created.

When we dislike ourselves, we are often depressed and frustrated. We are less able to serve the Lord.

A person who does not herself is usually less able to love other people fully or understand how others can love her

Questions I asked them to ponder: Are you happy today? Did you look at yourself today and think “I like myself?”Did you read your scriptures today? Did you say your morning prayers? Do you love yourself? Did you thank Heavenly Father for your blessings this past week? Did you do an act of service this past week? Did you make a new friend? Can you name one talent you posses? Have you given someone a compliment lately? When you look in the mirror do you like what you see? Have you shown your family you love them today? Did you listen to the talks in sacrament meeting Sunday? Have you been a good friend lately? Did you do something “awesome “ this week? Have you used the power of the Atonement in your life recently?

We read Matthew 22:36-39 and discussed this wonderful scripture and how we apply to ourselves.

Their handout said this quote I have up on my wall “I will be so happy that when others see me they will become happy too!”

We went up to the hospital to see little 2 yr old Macy Albert. The Micronesian people get  boils, and also what they call Guam sores. The boils resemble gout, and so the lower part of their legs swells up horribly and is bright red and then gets infected. The skin then starts to peel  leaving bad scars. Most all their legs have scars from the boils or sores. Macy little leg is bright red ,swollen and painful so she is in the hospital. I took her a little stuffed animal and book, compliments of one of the care packages! They didn’t bring anything for her to play with so she was so happy to see her new little gifts!

I’m sure these boils are a result from a diet they eat their entire lives, 3 times a day, which consists of white rice and Spam or some other canned meat. They don’t have refridgerators so nothing can be bought fresh. We have found there is a scarcity mentality when it comes to food served at any activity. They will come thru the line and pile their plates with food and then immediately get another plate and pile it up to take home. They know it may be a long time before they have something different to eat then the rice/spam combo! Reminds me of our kids growing up hurrying to gobble down their first helpings so they can get seconds before someone did! Hehehehe

Trunk or treat tomorrow night put on by the “Navies”  and chili cookoff.  Not a single Micronesian knows what chili is so I told them they better bring some rice! It was funny trying to explain to Sister Tigilmai what “trunk or treat was” What is trunk? She asked, How do you trick or treat a trunk? Hehehe we have been asked to be the judges for the chili, I will pass on the hot spicy ones and save those for Elder Norton! We need our Rachael and Dougie here for the spicy taste testing , they love spiciness!

Elder John crashed on his bike and broke open a coconut to wash the dirt off his shirt ,the amazing coconut and it 100 million uses. He is fine and getting the swing of how to ride a bike for the first time in his life. He is having a hard time adjusting to missionary work. He has never worked a day in his life, just went fishing whenever he wanted, typical lifestyle on Chuuk. He got mad the other day at Elder Hadder and just took off on his bike and rode home, and we had just had district meeting and the white handbook training about never being out of sight of your companion. Drama, drama, zone leaders were called in and took him for the day to figure out the problem. All is well now  but they both have another 6 weeks with each other! I remember Bobby telling us about a companion he had and they didn’t get along. He began to serve him and do little kindnesses like make his bed etc and how it changed everything for the better. So we do love those we serve!

I have the BEST companion ever! Elder Norton is such a good example to these young missionaries. He opens the door for me all the time ,helps with dinners, washes dishes, and compliments me in front of them. He always has my best interest in mind. After almost 7 months of being together 24/7 we are in the groove so to speak and when we are apart it feels strange! How grateful I am for all we are learning on our mission. We love our morning walks together and have such nice conversations ,surrounded by the beauty of this island and enveloped with the mantle of the calling and the love we have for each other.

Funny: Elder John trying to teach us how to put our tongue up on the roof of our mouth to speak his language, ”make your tongue go upstairs”  hehehe

“Scripture I love about being a missionary for the Lord!

 Alma 53;20,21

And they were all young men{women and senior couples} and they were exceedingly valiant for courage, and also for strength and activity: but behold this was not all, they were men{and women and senior couples} who were true at all times  in whatsoever thing they were entrusted.

Yea, they were men( women ,senior couples) of truth and soberness (being humble),for they had been taught to keep the commandments of God and to walk uprightly before him”

I love the gospel ,  I love my Savior, I love my companion , I love my family, I love “my people”  I love Guam and I love my mission! I am blessed!

Hugs from Sister Norton to you all

Wow what a great week:) No storm…. Just lots and lots and lots of rain.

Tonight we had our 4th  Merizo devotional! Under the canopy, ocean behind us, we with sweetest people on earth!

Saturday, 15 yr old Connie was baptized. She asked me to speak on the Gift of the Holy Ghost, I reflected back on my own baptism as I was just a year older than her.  What a blessing the gospel of Christ is in my life. How grateful I found it so early on in life.

Our elders are back on their bikes again as the car they were using needed to go somewhere else in the mission, so we take them to a village, drop them for the day then pick them up at night to get them home. Our new elder, Elder John is right from the MTC and a member of 2 years, from Chuuk, and speaks very little English.  This is his first time to ever ride a bike!  The other day we were at Brother Henry’s house, he made some hotdogs for lunch and was insisting Elder John eat more than one.  Elder John said no I’m full, so in his thick Chamorro accent Henry said  “my elder, when you are paddling that thing in your stomach is going to forget” translation: “when you are peddling on your bike because you only ate one hotdog you’re going to get hungry.  He he

We have to wait until next weekend for the rebroadcast of conference but we did listen a bit today and heard the revelation that girls can now go on a mission at 19 and the boys at 18. How exciting!! We thought of Jake, Sam and Jarod, being the oldest grandsons and the preparing they will make to be spiritually ready to go and serve the Lord a whole year earlier now!  We are so grateful for married sons and their wives who are raising children up in righteous homes, teaching them to love the Lord and live happy Christ-centered lives. Think of the impact all these boys will make in building the kingdom! Jake ,Sam , Jarod, Nathan, Brandon, Isaac, Jonathan, Matthew, Carter, Joshie,  Logan, Gavin , Ren, William and another baby boy coming to Scott and Emily! We know Gabriel is a missionary already on the other side of the veil, and now maybe the grandgirls will serve missions! I can’t wait to see what the Lord has in store for each of them! This mama/meme/missionary loves her family SO much:)
May each of you know how dearly you are loved!
"Let us be kind.
Let us forgive.
Let us talk peacefully with each other.
Let the love of God fill our hearts.
Let us do good unto all men"
                                                                                      I love you. Sister Norton

mission email oct 3

Yesterday we met and taught with the elders  a 19 yr.old young woman, Chelsie. She has had some contact with church members and actually knows Elder Albert. It’s such a small island! She wants to be baptized but will have to stop chewing beetlenut first. She has been chewing since she was 5. Bettlenut grows on the trees here and is part of the Chuukese culture to begin giving it to children when they are young. It turns their teeth this black/red color and it isn’t very pretty to say the least. It is addictive and hard to break the habit of it. She lives close to our ward building so she walked with her sister over and Elder Norton and I taught her the second lesson on the Plan of salvation before institiute tonite.

Institute was so fun! We taught about Captain Moroni and the title of liberty Alma 46 12 and Elder Norton found an old t-shirt and wrote on it and attached it to a bamboo stick. It read “In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children.” We then talked about the armor of God as found in Ephesians 6: 11-17.  “Put on the whole armor of God that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness, and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit which is the word of God”

I brought paper plates, boxes, etc and the girls had to make each of the pieces of armor. We then put the ”armor” on Elder Norton, and they thought that was just the best! I found little cheap $ 1 dart guns, and we talked about the “fiery darts of the wicked” What are some of the fiery darts thrown at them? Wow they had a lot to say! Gossip, Lying, Stealing, Immorality, Addictions, R-rated movies, music/magazines, cheating, immodesty  and  fighting were just a few ! We then shot those” fiery “darts from the dart guns at Elder Norton as he held up his shield of faith and sword of the word of God etc to keep him safe.

We bore testimony of how keeping the commandments and living the gospel of Jesus Christ helps us when temptations come. The Spirit was strong! Then it was time for fruit pizza and volleyball, and I am one tired missionary tonight!

We were told that a tropical storm category 3 is supposed to hit in the morning! Elder Norton better go pick up all the coconuts in the yard so they don’t come flying through any windows! We are so close to the ocean, so I will admit I’m a little worried! I guess I will wait to send this and return and report on what happens!

Another baptism on Saturday! Connie is 15 and has been waiting for months for her parents to give her permission to be baptized and they finally said ok! She asked me to give the talk on the Holy Ghost, and I am honored to do so!

Another Merizo devotional on Sunday, we hope to be getting closer and closer to getting a branch there.

Volleyball game next Friday night, baptisms almost every Saturday for the next month, zone conference on the 11th, teaching, visits, institute, district meetings, correlation meetings, driving our elders assigned on bikes to and from the villages, teaching new member lessons …… no wonder time is flying by!

“This is not my 2 years, but the Lord’s 2 years”
